Dog-like Cat or Little Rascal?!

Today I'll write on a slightly lighter topic: personality differences by a cat's sex.

A cat's personality, like a person's, is unique to each individual. Please take the sex-based differences described here as no more than a light general tendency.

So let me share, from a vet's perspective, the personality differences by sex, along with appearance traits and behavioral tendencies!

Vets can tell in 30 seconds?

Cats show big differences in appearance and personality by sex.

A large, round face usually means a male; a small, pointed, inverted-triangle face usually means a female. Females also tend to have relatively larger eyes and a delicate, dainty impression.

Males, even at around one year old, develop broad shoulders, defined muscles, and a developed jaw that makes the face look bigger. Easy to tell apart, right?

Are dog-like cats usually male?

Most male cats — especially neutered ones that live indoors — are often dog-like. Males are typically active, curious, and friendly toward people.

They are also not very sensitive to environmental changes. Perhaps because of the wild instinct to roam in search of mates, they often take moving house or a brief hospital visit in stride.

It's said that as long as food and a warm sleeping spot are provided, they don't mind moving much.

A little rascal? More like a fussy lady.

Unlike males, female cats tend to have a more delicate and particular temperament. They are more sensitive to environmental change than males. They have a very strong ‘nest’ concept, needing a defined space to bear and raise kittens.

As a result, they can be extremely sensitive about hospital visits or unfamiliar people.

But once trust is built, they can form an even deeper bond — you could call them ‘tsundere.’

Of course, take these differences lightly. Temperament can vary with each individual's socialization experience, timing of neutering, and interaction with the owner.

If you understand your cat's disposition well and treat it with an attitude of respecting and accepting it as it is, then whether a dog-like cat or a little rascal, it will become truly part of your family.
